WWW Born on Aug 6, 1991
At the time of this writing there are currently close to 925 Million Websites live on the internet. By the end of 2014 there will be 1 Billion Websites online.
How did it all begin?
The first website was put online on August 6th, 1991. It was built at CERN ( Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire ) and this was the site ” View Here “. It ran on a NeXT computer (NeXT was created by Steve Jobs).
So who was the brains behind the first website? The first Website was created by Sir Timothy John “Tim” Berners-Lee who was a CERN Software Engineer. He actually filed the paperwork for the World Wide Web back on March 12, 1989 and people are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the web this year. Kind of premature, the actual anniversary should be March 12, 2016 if you go by the day the website went live. I take a simplistic view at it. We celebrate birthdays not conceived days.
What does this mean to us?
The average person spends a total of 100 minutes connected to the internet daily. That number will greatly increase since more and more devices are getting connected to the net. Back in the day it was just a desktop, then a laptop, then smart phones, tablets and now Glasses and Watches. Soon we will all be like Gabriel from the hit show Intelligence on CBS, with a chip in our heads. Reminiscent of the Borg.
That is why your online presence is important! You can Virtually touch more people online in a day than you can meet in a lifetime.
