Web development is an amazing field to get into with so many opportunities to learn front end web development or backend web development, the sky’s the limit. The question becomes how long does it take to learn how to code
Like anything, it takes time to learn how to be a web developer. You need to set aside time to practice every single day, ideally for at least 1 to 2 hours per day. You should also have a plan and how you’re going to develop your path. I recommend that all new web developers start at the beginning and that means you learn HTML.
HTML is the skeleton of a website and it is the foundation for all websites that you visit online. It is really easy to learn as long as you dedicate some serious time to practicing with it.
Once you learn HTML, you can then start to learn CSS, which is how you add styling to a website. The basics of CSS are really not that complicated more advanced features will take time to master but with enough time you can learn CSS adequately enough to style a decent looking website.
Learning HTML and CSS should take you around two months and for those two months you should focus on learning the fundamentals and intermediate features of both HTML and CSS.
Once you have a solid understanding of HTML and CSS you can then proceed to learn JavaScript which adds dynamic features to a website. Then you can learn a backend programming language like PHP which enables you to dynamically process information on your Web server.
Most websites interact with a database like MySQL. Learning MySQL is more advanced and will require additional training but with enough practice you can learn how to create a database driven website using a combination of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL.
You can learn all of these languages within six months to one year but in order to become a master programmer or web developer, it will take anywhere from 5 to 10 years. They say it can take about 10,000 hours for you to master a particular skill, this generally takes about 10 years. So if you’re looking to become a master web developer you need to put in the time and the effort to really enhance your skill set.
My recommendation is to spend a significant amount of time researching, studying and applying what you learn so you can get enough practice and enhance your skill set.
You can also spend time with other developers who are a few levels above you and learn from their experience that way you will have somebody to ask questions if you ever get stuck.
Here is a video that I created that highlights what it takes to become a master web developer. Check it out and I am sure you’re going to find that becoming a web developer isn’t as hard as you may think.
