Over the years, I’ve worn many hats, from Business Owner of a Major Tax Franchise, Majority Leader of the NYC Council for 12 Years, to Realtor and Web Designer/Developer.
These various positions have given me the opportunity to dive deep into what it takes to succeed even when there seems to be an amazing amount of competition.
Trust me when I say, it gets competitive in Politics, Owning a seasonal business like Tax Preparation isn’t a walk in the park, being a Realtor in an area with Thousands of other highly qualified Realtors keeps you on your toes and working in the world of Web Design & Development is no different.
One thing that I learned early on that helped me in my various positions is the understanding that even though there are so many people literally vying for your same clients or position in public office, they weren’t my real competition. I realized that there is more than enough opportunity out there for everyone to eat.
My real competition was and is with myself. Yes, there were and are better Realtors, Tax Preparers, Elected Officials and Designers than me. But that shouldn’t keep me from pursuing something that I enjoy doing and it shouldn’t stop you either. We can’t all be like Michael Jordan or Coby Bryant but we can all put in the effort to make ourselves better daily.
“Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.” T. Alan Armstrong
My plan in everything I do is to study hard, research what works and what doesn’t, find a mentor that has the experience that I lack and then get ready to blaze my own path. Have a deep sense of focus even when there might be a few trials and tribulations. Overcome the obstacles that might seem to fall in front of you daily. You must realize that there is a place for you amongst the stars in your craft.
As you can see, I’m a strong believer in Motivation. Some people don’t believe in it because it doesn’t seem to be long lasting. It’s easy to get motivated after attending a conference, seminar or after reading or hearing a powerful speaker but it’s true that sometimes that single event doesn’t last. That is why one of my favorite quotes is “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.” by Zig Ziglar
The Takeaway
Just because there is competition in your field, or even if there is someone that has more experience than you, that shouldn’t stop you from giving it your all. As the saying goes, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among stars!” – Les Brown
