Goals for 2017

Happy New Years, It’s 2017!

2016 came and went in what seemed like a blink of an eye. Did you fulfill all your goals and resolutions from the previous year? I know I didn’t and that’s ok. I have a tendency to set the bar high and make my goals virtually impossible to attain. As they say, Shoot for the Moon, even if you miss, you’ll land amongst the Stars.

Always Improving

Getting Married

Somehow I convinced the most amazing woman in the world to be my wife. I am a very lucky man. My mission is to spend the rest of my days showing her how much I love her.

My Coding Skills

My goals for 2016 were to fine tune my coding skills and implement new development tools into my workflow. I’ve been working with HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL & WordPress for a while now but I know there is so much more to learn.

Some additional tools I’ve introduced are Grunt which is a task runner, Git which is for version control and of course improving my knowledge of the tools I already use.

Command Line Interface

So I took it upon myself to go deeper. Over the year I learned how to effectively work in the Linux Command Line, Command Prompt & Powershell.  This has greatly improved my knowledge of how to manage and navigate my computer without using a graphical user interface.

Building & Repairing Computers

I also built computers from scratch and repaired several MacBook Pro’s and iMac’s. I now have a greater understanding of the inner workings of computers. From the Motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD, Hard Drive, NIC Network Interface Card, Power supply, Wire Management, Liquid Cooling and Internal Air Circulation.

YouTube

In 2016, I started to actively create YouTube Videos which I use as a way to help my clients and others, learn more about how WordPress and Websites work. I started the videos because I realized that some people don’t want to read long articles but would rather have direct instructions presented in Video Format.

As part of my effort of creating videos for YouTube, I learned how to use various tools from Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Camtasia, Screenflow, Editing and more.

Working with all Three Operating Systems

I made it my goal to work seamlessly with all three operating systems from Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Besides the standard edition of Windows that we use personally, I also worked with Windows Server 2008, 2012 and will soon be learning the new elements introduced in Windows Server 2016.

Security & Networks

This is an area that I have been spending a significant amount of time on. Analyzing network traffic, protecting networks and websites, pouring over log files of attempted hacks of my sites and clients websites. It’s amazing how much you can learn from the log files. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

So Much More to Learn

While I feel I have accomplished a lot in 2016, I know there is so much more to learn. I can go deeper in all aspects of the various skills I’ve attained and those I’ve improved upon. Always be learning is my mantra which I strongly believe will not only benefit myself but also those who I help.

Areas Where I Fell Short

Blogging

While I did learn a lot over the course of the year, there are some areas where I know I need improvement. Blogging is something I need to commit myself to. I find myself going a weeks without publishing an article. So to combat this I have a goal of writing 365 articles this year on various topics ranging from WordPress Themes, Plugins, SEO, Social Media, Security, Blogging and other topics I find interesting.

Video Production

While I did start creating a significant amount of videos for my YouTube Channel, I do find myself falling behind on production. Videos do take more time to put together so for this year I plan on creating between 100-200 videos. These will most likely coincide with the various articles I write.

Social Media

2017 is the year I intend to take my Social Media Game to the next level. I’m looking to increase my Social Media Engagement significantly. I’m talking about Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest and my favorite of them all is Quora. The goal is to ensure that I can find better ways to communicate and share my thoughts with others who might benefit from them.

The Takeaway

We all set goals, make resolutions and sometimes we achieve what we strive for and other times we miss the mark. It’s easy to let time pass us by and hard to take full control of every single waking moment. I achieved a lot in 2016 but I know where I fell short. 2017 will be a ground-breaking year.

Make a promise to yourself. No Excuses!
